The Scotsman: "Mod chiefs call for lively debate on the relevance of Gaelic"

The Scotsman reports today that a debate is to be held in Wick to discuss the relevance of Gaelic to Caithness, in the runup to the Gaelic Festival taking place in the area in the summer.

The comments, as always, are colourful: "It is doubtful whether Gaelic is a language in the technical sense of the word; If it is a language at all, it is a degenerate, impoverished one which is irrelevant to the modern world of global communications, has nothing to contribute to the general advance of mankind and futile, expensive attempts to foist it on the general public is an irresponsible waste of taxpayers' money. If a few sad souls wish to pursue its"study" as a hobby, let them do so a their own expense." So says Cailean, from Dun Deagh.
